PHNOM KULEN

Phnom Kulen

This is where the 500 year ‘Age of Angkor’ began. Phnom Kulen is the mountain where Jayavarman II, in the 9th Century, initiated a royal linga cult, declaring an independent Cambodia under a single ruler. There is a stunning waterfall here, together with an active Pagoda, and the area of Kbal Spean and the River of a Thousand Lingas. Phnom Kulen is located approximately 50km from Siem Reap and is a long & bumpy journey, but worth the visit. Vehicles are allowed up the mountain in the morning and down in the afternoon, so make sure you arrive before midday. Please note that the Angkor Archaeological Park ticket/pass does not cover this area. There is a separate entrance fee to Phnom Kulen of $20 per person.
